Island Songs

If I were stuck on an island and given a solar-powered iPod with only ten songs to have on it, these are the ones that I would absolutely have to have on it!

1. “Dog Days Are Over” Florence + The Machine

Inevitably, life brings change and moments of happiness. Although the current times may feel daunting, or in some cases, the idea of healing and experiencing happiness may be more frightening than continuing to live in the familiar pits of suffering—a common fear among sufferers of childhood anxiety and depression—changes are simply unavoidable. The message of the song is that changes are unavoidable, and so if I were stuck on an island this song would reassure me that something will change—be it my circumstances or myself. It is an ominous kind of hopeful.

2. “Sometimes” Ours

The message this conveys to me is that someone always misses you, some may even relate to your suffering. If I were gone, someone—at least one person—would surely notice and grieve. This song is the grief and the relation to the pain of the lost. Being stuck on a hypothetical island, this song would remind me that someone surely knows that I am missing and would be devastated to learn I gave up before rescue.

3. “Little Lion Man” Mumford & Sons

This is depression. Sometimes you just need to be sad and hate yourself for a moment or two and you need a soundtrack for it. This song calls you out on your own personal failures, or lets you call yourself out on them. I would want this on my island solar iPod so I had a soundtrack to be upset with myself to and so I could pretend I was in a movie. That is the only purpose this song serves me.

4. “Two Birds” Regina Spektor

This song is to remind myself that I cannot always wait for others to do things for me, or to change with me. Especially on an island by myself, I cannot afford to wait passively for the rescue. This is the reminder that I need to keep working to stay alive and to make finding me easier.

5. “Eyes on Fire” Blue Foundation

You can take this song one of two ways. Whether you choose to hear this as recovery from abuse or as shedding the pressure of a brutal society, this song is the type that makes you focus, and it builds a slow flame in your veins to get you moving and working again. Specific to this island of mine, though, the song makes me mad at the island and inspires me to survive in spite of it.

6. “Mrs. Potato Head” Melanie Martinez

Hopefully by time I get off this island society’s standard of beauty will have changed for my favor. If not, I will continue using this song to scare myself away from expensive and dangerous procedures. If I keep this on repeat, then by the time I get back I will definitely have talked myself out of them.

7. “Don’t You Dare Forget the Sun” Get Scared

This exists to talk me out of suicide. I mean being stuck on this island, alone, for who knows how long, I would probably at some point consider just offing myself. It's better than starvation and infection....but this would remind me that no, giving up is not a good choice. Also, when “Little Lion Man” makes me too mad at myself this will help wind me back down.

8. “Fences” Paramore

Again, this song is to help with coping by pretending I am in a movie. Cue the fourth-wall-breaks and entertaining myself via dancing that I pray Google satellites miss out on. This is mainly just for fun when I cannot sleep, or when I want to remind the island that even if it kills me, I will be going down in STYLE—one last spite to the island.

9. “Nicotine” Panic! At The Disco

Whatever bad habit I develop on this island, whatever dumb stuff I get into, and whatever probably dangerous animal I encounter and want to pet…this is for you. This is also my reminder that as fun as breaking the fourth wall is, and as nice as pretending I am the star of a movie is, I cannot die doing that. I need to put the fantasy aside and work for my life.

10. “Helena (So Long & Goodnight)” My Chemical Romance

This is the island's new lullaby, also what I plan on screaming at it when I leave. That is really my only intention for this song. Great—not—memories, Island, but you are dead to me now! So long! Good night!
